Quantitative Evaluation of Porosity in Aluminum Die Castings by Fractal Analysis of Perimeter

چکیده
In the die-casting process, the formation of pores in components is unavoidable. This porosity has a harmful effect on the strength and pressure tightness of die castings. To eliminate the porosity in components, its predominant cause has to be identified as being due to either shrinkage or gas. In practice, however, it is frequently difficult to tell the difference between porosity due to shrinkage and that due to gas from observing die castings. Accurate identification enables die casters to take corrective action. To identify the porosity accurately and to take corrective action in the die-casting process, the quantitative estimation of the morphology of pores such as their shape or spatial distribution can be a source of useful information. In this study, two types of fractal analyses are proposed to characterize the porosity in terms of the shape of individual pores and the spatial distribution of multiple pores. It is shown that these are indicators of whether the predominant cause of the porosity is shrinkage or gas. These parameters are expected to indicate the action that should be taken to manufacture pore-free die castings. [doi:10.2320/matertrans.MRA2007314]

EFFECT OF REFINING PROCESS ON POROSITY AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HIGH PRESSURE AL-SI ALLOY DIE CASTINGS
Abstract: This study presents the research results of effect that refining process has on porosity and mechanical properties of high pressure die castings made of AlSi12S alloy. The operation of refining was carried out in a melting furnace with the use of an FDU Mini Degasser. Mechanical properties (UTS, YS, Elongation, Brinell Hardness) were assessed on samples taken from high pressure die ca...
متن کاملPorosity Control and Fatigue Behavior in A356-T61 Aluminum Alloy
Much work has been done, in recent years, to characterize the factors that cause porosity in aluminum castings, and to analyze the impact of porosity or microstructural parameters on fatigue life. What has yet to be done is systematically separate out the effects of dendrite arm spacing and largest pore size from each other, and from the underlying chemical and process parameters that influence...

متن کاملDevelopment and investigation of three-phase model of the mushy zone for analysis of porosity formation in solidifying castings
-In this paper a three-phase model (liquid, solid and gas) of the mushy zone for investigation of porosity formation in solidifying castings is developed. This model takes into account the release of the dissolved gas from the alloy as well as heat transfer and interdendritic fluid flow in the mushy zone. An important aspect of this work is related to accounting for the term describing porosity...
متن کاملDie-Casting Process Modeling Using Neural Networks
This chapter presents the application of a neural network to the industrial process modeling of high-pressure die casting (HPDC). The large number of interand intradependent process parameters makes it difficult to obtain an accurate physical model of the HPDC process that is paramount to understanding the effects of process parameters on casting defects such as porosity. The first stage of the...
